The aim of this monograph should be considered as an
attempt to evaluate the historical progress of the
establishment of the South African Teachers' Council
for Whites on andragogical/pedagogical perspective.
In chapter one concepts, which will occur in later
chapters are explained to orientate the reader.
After the orientation in chapter one, an explanation
is given in chapter two of the concepts, •profession•
and •occupation•. Subsequently the motives for the
origin of the professional associations and the pro-
fessional process of development which followed are
to be investigated.
Certain identified criteriums found on the androgogi-
cal/pedagogical level and which dictates the norm for
the profession, have been used to highlight profess-
sional requirements. Thereafter a brief evaluation
of the •active• structures of the professional essence
follows.
In chapter three a reconnaissance is undertaken of
the functioning and establishment of the General Teach-
ing Council in Scotland. Together with this the at-
tempts to establish a similar board in Wales and
England are investigated.
In chapter four the history of progress that led to
the establishment of the South African Teachers Coun-
cil for Whites, is investigated. Contributions made
by the instances and persons, other than members of
the Teaching profession, are mentioned. Then follows
a detailed evaluation of the role played by the Fede-
ral Council of the Teachers• Association. Because the above mentioned Council is the representative of
the organised teaching·profession, we have emphasized
the fact that for many years there have been represent-
tations for the establishment of the south African
Teachers• Council.
In the final chapter an attempt is made to determine
to what extent the South African Teachers• Council
has made a contribution to co-partnership of the
teaching profession.
Certain problem aspects are lifted out and recommen-
dations are made to improve the infra-structure.
Finally the attention can be drawn to the actions
that are taking place on the political front with re-
gard to the new dispensation where it concerns the
teaching profession. |
