There are many factors contributing to student success in South African Open Distance Learning (ODL) in first level Accounting Sciences, both in terms of module success and degree completion. This case study utilised a sequential explanatory mixed methods design to understand the notion of students’ fit in higher education, first level Accounting Sciences (FAC1502), and Unisa. The study entailed an analysis using descriptive statistics of responses to a self-designed survey sent to all FAC1502 registered students in 2021, followed by a thematic analysis of interviews with purposively selected students, lecturers, and tutors. The findings highlight that fit occurs throughout the different layers of a student’s bioecological systems, where interactions mainly occur on an individual and microsystem-level between student and institution, with mesosystem interactions lacking. Using Subotzky and Prinsloo’s socio-critical model and Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model provides evidence of differences between students and intuitional perceptions of fit in higher education, ODL and FAC1502.
Ziningi izinto ezinomthelela empumelelweni yabafundi abafunda eSikhungweni Sokufunda Nanoma Ukuphi eNingizimu Afrika (ODL) ezingeni lokuqala lezeSayensi Yokuhlelwa Kwamabhuku Ezimali, mayelana nokuphumelela isifundo kanye nokuphothula iziqu. Lolu cwaningo lwemibhalo lusebenzise uhlelo oluxubile oluchazayo lokuhlola iqophelo nezilinganiso ukuze kuhlonzwe umqondo wokufaneleka kwabafundi yimfundo ephakeme, izinga lokuqala lezeSayensi Yokuhlelwa Kwamabhuku Ezimali (iFAC1502), e-Unisa. Lolu cwaningo lubandakanya ukuhlaziya kusetshenziswa izibalo ezichazayo eziphendula uhlelo lokuhlola oluthunyelwe kubo bonke abafundi ababhalisele iFAC1502 ngonyaka wezi-2021, kanjalo nezinkulumongxoxo zokuhlaziya izihloko nabafundi, othisha kanye namathutha akhethwe ngenhloso ethile. Imiphumela igqamisa ukuthi kunokufaneleka okukhona kubona bonke abafundi ngokuhlukana kwendlela abakhuliseke ngayo nezindawo abakhulele kuzo, nokulapho ukuxhumana kwenzeka khona kakhulu ezingeni lomuntu ngamunye nohlelo lokwazisana phakathi komfundi nesikhungo, kanjalo nokuntuleka kohlelo lokwazisa ukusebenzisana komfundi nesikhungo. Ngokusetshenziswa kwemodeli yesocio-critical kaSubotzky noPrinsloo kanye nemodeli yebioecological kaBronfenbrenner kutholakale ubufakazi bomehluko phakathi kwabafundi kanye nemibono yokufaneleka kwabafundi yimfundo ephakeme, i-ODL neFAC1502.
