International migration and employment, the case of foreign nationals in Dunoon, Cape Town, South Africa

Abstract

This research was focused on assessing the relationship between international migration and employment in Dunoon, Cape Town, South Africa. This assessment was essential to determine the reasons for such an increase in international migration and to understand their reasons for migration. This study showed that there are both push and pull factors for international migration. This study focused on participants from five African countries that are currently residing in Dunoon. These are Zimbabweans, Congolese (DRC), Malawians, Nigerians and Cameroonians. The findings of this study showed that there are three main determinants of international migration, that is, economic, social and political. These foreign nationals are faced with both positive and negative aspects as international migrants in Dunoon, and despite the negatives they still view South Africa as a good host country. This is demonstrated by the fact that the majority of the research participants do not intend to return to their home countries.
