dc.description.abstract Naming practices is primarily concerned with the study of names in a literary work. These names of characters and places are studied in relation to literary aspects such as characterization, plot, action and theme. The purpose of this study, therefore, is not just to collect names in a literary work but more importantly to show the significance of these names in the development of plot, action and theme . Chapter one is concerned with introduction i.e. aim, scope and method of study. In chapter two we develop a theoretical framework. Amongst other things, the following are discussed: - naming of boys and girls in Batswana families biblical names - procedure followed in naming of children - literary onomastics defined - general focus on literary names - the role of literary onomastics in literary analysis. Chapter three deals with literary aonomastics as a stylistic device. The following are briefly discussed: - the concept style - a comparison between linguistic stylistics and literary stylistics - naming practices in A. K. Armah' s "Two Thousand Seasons". Chapter four is concerned with naming practices in J. M. Ntsime's Pelo e ja Serati. The following points are discussed: - character names and the development of the plot - names and action - place names and plot - naming and theme. Chapter five deals with conclusion i.e. both the summary of the whole study and general remarks are undertaken. en
