As Anaïs Nin said, “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect”. No single collection of poems and short stories can encapsulate the range of human emotions both as part of living in the South African country and beyond its borders. Nevertheless, Wistfulness of Time offers a selection of poems and short stories that embody the theme of nostalgia and the idea of memory. From artists such as Petrus van Staden, Busisiwe Mahlangu, Janice Kudakwashe Mamukwa, Shaleen Jacobs, Thendo Netshivhera, Nivonne Jackson and many other students at the University of South Africa this anthology was born; the first of many to come. Despite the diversity of voices and the various depictions of the theme, these students have been successful in giving a voice to and describing the human condition. They are well on their way of carving their mark alongside the many great artists of South Africa and the world. |
