dc.description.abstract The expression of possession is complicated in Northern Sotho. Research for this study has shown that (i) a (marked) possessive construction is not only used to refer to a possessive relationship between two objects, but it may also have a descriptive function, and (ii) constructions in which there is no possessive 'marker', are also used to refer to a possessive relationship between two objects. The marked possessive construction is being investigated on syntactic, morphological and semantic level. Alternative constructions referring to possessive relationships between two objects, are being investigated: (a) the syntactic appearance of nouns referring to body parts in Northern Sotho; (b) the role of the process in these alternative constructions; (c) compound nouns with possible possessive elements. en
