This qualitative research sought to determine the value of modus operandi when identifying the offender of rape cases. Women in general more especially in rural areas are prey to rape because of the geographical setup. The feminist theory views rape as “a pseudosexual act” used by males to intimidate and dominate women. The social learning theory postulates that rape results from the male acquisition of attitudes and vicarious learning experiences favourable to males behaving aggressively toward women. Rape undermines the dignity of women in a sense that upon completion of the rape ordeal, suspects still walk free. In most instances, suspects of rape are known to the victim, fear dominates the world of feminist to speak out about rape incident. The community has a greater role to play in the identification of suspect because suspect comes from the communities we live in. The focal point in this study is to determine the value of modus operandi when identifying the offender of rape cases because there is a need for the utilisation of modus operandi in rape cases. Existing literature, articles, internet and officials documents were used in this study. The researcher conducted interviews with detectives in Limpopo on selected police stations who investigate rape cases. Feedback obtained from participants was analysed. |
