dc.description.abstract In this study the concept of the 'imperfect tense-a' as a tense morpheme in Northern Sotho, is reconsidered. Existing views on this morpheme and the so-called long and short forms of the verb are discussed critically. It is concluded that the acceptability of -a- in the verb is closely linked to the semantic cohesion between components in a sentence. This in turn is directly related to the context of discourse in which sentences occur. The proposal is made that -a- should be regarded as a marker of complete communicative units. Accordingly, information which follows the long form of the verb 1 s excluded from the basic communicative unit on the grounds that it constitutes redundant information in the context of discourse. On the other hand, information following the short form of the verb, is presented as new information and as such assumes an indissoluble semantic relationship with the verb. en
