Exploring police-community relations in Marikana

Abstract

Following the Marikana massacre, the researcher conducted a research titled “Exploring police-community relations in Marikana”. The aim of the research was to determine the impact of the Marikana massacre on police-community relations in Marikana. A qualitative research approach was adopted to undertake this research. The research was piloted by the researcher. Six focus groups interviews were conducted, using the same interview schedule. An audio recorder was used to record the interviews, which were later transcribed by the researcher. The collected data was analysed and interpreted in a thematic manner. The research findings revealed that the Marikana massacre had a negative impact on police-community relations in Marikana. Recommendations based on the research findings were drawn.
