Mzansi Taal: Online Dictionary and Encyclopedia

Abstract

The Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages collaborates with Mzansi Taal on a project for a South African Lingo dictionary and encyclopedia. Language is developing at a rapid rate because of multilingualism and new age technology such as digital and social media. This has brought about a large vocabulary of words and phrases used every day by millions of South Africans in various communities across the country. Mzansi Taal aims to capture and educate the general public about the terminology used widely across South Africa. The collaboration focuses on colloquial language used by the youth all over the country; it promotes diversity, multiculturalism and multilingualism.
