dc.description.abstract A case study of the USHEPiA (University Science, Humanities and Engineering Partnerships in Africa) project is presented in an attempt to suggest ways of developing African research capacity using a network of institutions. The USHEPiA experience demonstrates the effectiveness of a network based on a common needs assessment, the enthusiasm of all participants, and adequate management capacity. This study examines the origins of the project, reviews its modus operandi and its achievements, and then attempts a critical analysis of its effectiveness to date and the lessons learned.
