Description:	Volume 2: Manuscript diary covers period 18 July 1884 - 7 April 1895; pp 1 - 176, plus cover. Hoffmann describes his daily life as a missionary in Mashonaland. The missionaries built their own houses, schools, churches and taught themselves to speak Shona. Hoffmann provides information on the politics of the British South Africa Company at the time and the problems which the missionaries encountered from Makalanga Chief Gutu. Carl Hoffmann made delightful sketches of the people, their customs and the environment. Hoffmann included poems of his fellow missionary, Ernst Pauli, in the diary.
