Abstract
PHOSPHOGYPSUM IS A BY-PRODUCT OF THE manufacture of wet phosphoric acid, and most of it produced in the world goes to waste. The impurities in phosphogypsum greatly restrict its industrial use in Portland cement. We have investigated a method to remove the phosphorus impurities present in South African phosphogypsums, and found that the combination of a thermal and a sulphuric acid treatment was successful in removing most of the harmful phosphorus impurities. Phosphogypsum treated by this means could successfully replace natural gypsum in Portland cement.
