Abstract
The importance of the gold-mining industry for South African sustained economic growth can't be overemphasised. Safety procedure are very important in this environment. The dangerous working conditions can contribute to high levels of stress. This, coupled with South Africa's volatile political situation, makes the threat of labour conflict a very real one. Labour relations and the management thereof are therefore considered to be of the utmost importance in the gold-mining industry. Herewith also arises the important question: Do supervisors possess the right knowledge, skills and attitudes to ensure that labour relations are managed successfully.
