This proposal makes the case for a Program or Foundation for the Advancement of Africa Economics. This program will offer research grants, sponsor workshops and seminars and ultimately have teaching/curricular programs as well as a publications program. There will also be a component, to be described later, to foster the dissemination of the research output with a view to supporting policy making and enhancing the awareness in Africa of many of the economic issues of the day. Enhancing the awareness in Africa of many of the development issues of the day is central to the concept of the "Development University" that is often talked of. The latter aspect of the proposal could help further thinking this idea through; at least as far as the economics field is concerned. This proposal will first make the case for a Program in African Economics. We remark later on that this could also serve as a model for a Program in Social Sciences. The hope is to begin with economics and gradually extend the research collaboration’ to the rest of the social sciences. |
