dc.description.abstract	The article argues that New Testament Studies and Missiology exist in an uncomfortable relationship in South Africa. The two main reasons for this are the separation between the theological disciplines since the Enlightenment, and the hegemony in biblical studies of the historical-critical method. The article uses the phrase "for reasons of the heart" in an attempt to analyse the uneasy relationship between New Testament Studies and Missiology in South Africa, and also attempts to take the debate further by suggesting possible ways forward. Both the grammar of the mind and the rhetoric of the heart will be necessary to bridge this gulf.	en
