dc.description.abstract	I was born at the Paarl on the fifth day of September 1849 and baptised in the Dutch Reformed Church at that place on the thirtieth day of that month.3 I cannot, of course, assert these facts from my own knowledge but for their correctness have to depend upon a baptismal certificate. I had several godparents, only one of whom I ever knew; but as none of them thereafter ever apparently concerned themselves about me I need not further advert to them.	en
