This composition intricately weaves a symphonic sound rooted in the rhythmic essence of Malende music, a tradition deeply embedded in the cultural heritage of the Venda people. Motivated by a creative impulse, this composition seeks to explore the dynamic interplay of diverse instruments, skilfully intertwining with the captivating Malende rhythmic pattern. The rhythmic sound woven in Malende music unveils a remarkable continental resonance, echoing similarities with rhythmic patterns found in various African societies. Despite diverse nomenclatures across different regions, the rhythmic figure employed in Malende becomes a unifying thread, weaving through the collective musical consciousness of numerous African communities. This shared phenomenology emerges from the composer's deliberate intent to craft music that resonates deeply with the diverse and vibrant traditions of African cultures. The profound impact of this rhythmic convergence was exemplified in the premiere of the composition by the Ghana Philharmonic Orchestra. Their acknowledgment of the familiarity of the rhythmic pattern resonates particularly with the Ewe people of Ghana, further highlighting the interconnectedness of musical traditions across the continent. The usage of this rhythmic motif serves as a testament to a shared African identity, transcending borders and fostering a sense of collective musical heritage. |

The Malende dance composition, in particular, serves as a symphonic realisation of this cultural borrowing. Delving into the rich heritage of Malende rhythmic strata, the composer selects a specific pattern that stands as the cornerstone of Venda music. This rhythmic figure, deeply embedded in the cultural roots, serves as the nucleus for the entire composition. However, it is not a mere replication; instead, it undergoes a transformative process, a reimagining and appropriation that showcases my unique perspective and innovative rhythmic layering. This musical journey becomes a testament to the fluidity of culture, where traditions are not rigidly preserved but are dynamically reinterpreted, contributing to the ever-evolving narrative of musical expression. |
