dc.description.abstract Carl Buchner (1921 - 2003) art teacher, lecturer, art critic and painter held his first solo exhibition in 1954. His paintings are to be found in the South African National Gallery in Cape Town, the Pretoria Art Museum, the Rembrandt Art Foundation, Unisa, University of Johannesburg, Hester Rupert Museum and many other art galleries and private collections. The Buchner Papers comprise of personal papers, correspondence, art catalogues, opening speeches at art exhibitions, journal titles, press cuttings, photographs of Buchner himself, his paintings, family and friends. The archival materials are of great research value to scholars interested in Carl Buchner’s oeuvre, as well as the development and history of 20th century South African art. en
