dc.description.abstract Program integration combines independent enhancements to some version of a software system into a new system that includes the enhancements and the old system. Current approaches use the slice concept. The latter is a method for automatically decomposing programs by analysing their data and control flow. In this article, we show that the use of this concept in program integration is inadequate. We propose a new approach based on role concept which overcomes slice problems. A role models the behaviour by which a variable or a procedure intervenes in a given program. en
