dc.description.abstract An evaluation is made of the success of equivalence algorithms to be used for surname matching in a South African Genealogical Database. Surnames in the database can be grouped in ideal equivalence classes. The algorithms, variations of the Soundex method, are taken from approximate word or string matching algorithms in the literature. The norms and statistics used in the evaluation process are briefly discussed. A few areas for further research have been identified. en
