This study seeks to explore teachers’ perceptions on the teaching of mathematics in the 21st
century. Using the context of a high failure rate in mathematics, the study followed a qualitative
research method to collect and analyse data. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with
purposively selected teachers teaching mathematics in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Qualitative data
was analysed thematically and supported with literature. The findings indicate that teachers face
challenges in planning mathematics classes due to factors such as limited resources,
infrastructure and overcrowding. In this study we argue that effective teaching and learning is
extremely difficult if not impossible in poor resourced and disorganised classrooms. If the
challenges can be addressed, the high failure rate will be improved. |
