dc.description.abstract This study investigated methods of recruiting and the identification of potential of prospective trainee chartered accountants. The first five chapters deal with a literature study of local and international sources on the recruiting and selection of trainee chartered accountants, whereupon an empirical study involving the big eight auditing firms in South Africa was undertaken to examine their recruiting and selection methods. The five most important success indicators are academic ability, communication and interpersonal skills, adaptability, team player/functioning in a group context and drive/performance orientation. The evaluation of these attributes should, however, take place on a more scientific basis and psychometric testing and competency based analysis should be applied. Success indicators identified specifically for black accountants are drive and motivation, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, sensitivity for different cultures and exposure to the western business environment.
