Intersectionality was used as a lens in this article to analyse the recounted experiences of 20
former female inmates (prisoners) of correctional centres (prisons) in South Africa. It was found
that if stratification identifiers such as race, class and gender are simultaneously analysed in
conjunction with female crime, distinctive trends of criminality can be identified. Fraud and
shoplifting were the two most common offences for which women in this study were sentenced and
the majority of them had relatively short sentences. It was found that the types of crime women
have committed and their experiences whilst being incarcerated were influenced by their access
to financial resources which, in turn, was simultaneously influenced by their educational levels
and racial category. Multiple positions of power and hardship were revealed in this study.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the literature review and observable experiences on mixed
reality posed by the use of information and communication technology (ICT) systems in the education
system in the South African landscape. Human progress in the 21st century has been characterised
by the rise of computer technology, that has become a defining feature in almost all social spheres.
However, the reality shows that though ICT is celebrated for its undisputed, “uncertainty” and
efficient services, especially when it comes to communication, information and dissemination. It
also tends to encourage the abandonment of other modes of communication, specifically in relation
to teaching and learning. In discovering the challenges and possibilities posed by the information
technology, the notion of a didactical triangle will be explored. Literature reveals that the advent of
ICT brought about various developmental opportunities and threats to human life. This article argues
that consideration of institution and context is fundamental when it comes to a better understanding
of the practicalities of information technology. This article will add value by shedding light on the
realities and challenges in relation to ICT on the human life. The conclusion is that interventions
that relates to information and communication technology have to seriously consider the structural
constraints of access and social inequity as well as the effects of coloniality.

Domestic work constitutes a large sector, with more than a
million women working as domestic workers. In South Africa, it
is a norm that whites employ black women as domestic
servants, but with the demise of apartheid, there has been an
increase in the employment of domestic workers in black
families. However, hiring family members as domestic workers
in black families is an under-researched area. Drawing from the
authors dissertation, this article examines family domestic work
– whereby family members hire their relatives as domestic
workers – in rural Limpopo. The study mobilises a qualitative
approach to comprehend the experiences of hiring kin as
domestic workers. Findings illustrate that family domestic work
is an act of reciprocal care amongst family members. Relatives
hire their kin to help with domestic duties and enabling family
members to provide for their families. The relationship
between ‘sister-maids’ and ‘sister-madams’ is intertwined, which
leads to the difficulty of balancing formal employment and
family relations. Thus, family domestic work symbolises a
capitalised reciprocal caring within black families in postapartheid
South Africa, as helping involves paying each other.
The article does not generalise on family domestic work, but
contributes to the body of knowledge about domestic work
within black families.

The post-apartheid era in South Africa was intended to be a period in which to redress past injustices in
almost all social spheres, including education, particularly in terms of curriculum transformation to include
African-centered knowledge systems. However, research reveals the limitations posed by compensatory
education, particularly when it comes to the provision of skills that instil self-reliance abilities. In attempting
to gain a better understanding of such experiences, the qualitative research design was used to collect data by
conducting face-to-face interviews with young people residing in the labor reserves in South Africa. Findings
indicate that although some individuals possess certain academic qualifications, such qualifications tend to be
limited in securing their livelihoods. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the curriculum
incorporate the African knowledge systems to offer alternatives to assess the untapped skills that could be
useful to individuals to secure their daily life needs.

This seminar will dissect the rationale behind the ceaseless attack/s on the Black African community in Africa especially in South Africa and recently Nigeria. The Afrocentric perspective will be utilised in trying to understand this situation that tends to engulf the Black African populace specifically in the so called ‘postcolonial/ postapartheid/ democratic era that is perceived as a liberated state to some. Nonetheless, the structural violence will be revisited as a social machinery for subjugation and domination that breeds imperial violence as a strategy for prohibiting Black African people’s self-reliance and reaching their full potential. Furthermore, this seminar will also look at issues such as lack of respect amongst Black African community, opportunism, ignorance or imposed self-hatred of self-identity, Stockholm syndrome and patterns of coloniality. It will conclude by suggesting some possibilities that can be explored to curb this imperial violence that keeps on revealing its notorious colonial tendencies among the Black African population in general.

Although consensual same-sex sexual relationships in female prisons have been a topic of scholarly discourse, it has received little attention in African countries, and South Africa is no exception. Consensual same-sex sexual relationships between females in African prisons have received little attention by researchers since studies on prison sex in Africa tend to focus on the sexual relationships between male prisoners, particularly the coercive nature of such relationships. Drawing on the retrospective narratives of six female former prisoners, this study examines the consensual nature of same-sex sexual relationships in South African female prisons. One of the findings of this study suggests that consensual same-sex sexual relationships in South African female prisons are pervasive. It was reported that the motivations for female prisoners’ engagement in consensual sexual relationships with other females in prison are the desire to satisfy material, sexual, and emotional needs, as well as, the desire for friendship and companionship.

The inadequate conditions of South Africa’s correctional facilities are well known. Health care, sanitation, food provision, access to education and reading materials, and, in particular, overcrowding are considerable challenges faced by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). Based on interviews with former prisoners, this article retrospectively examines the conditions under which female inmates are incarcerated in South Africa. Findings show that prison conditions in some female correctional facilities are poor and impact negatively on prisoners during, and sometimes after, their incarceration. (‘Prisons’ and ‘correctional facilities’ are used interchangeably in this article).

Domestic work — one of the largest sources of employment
in South Africa — is rooted in the colonial and apartheid era,
during which black women worked as domestic servants for white
families. In contemporary South Africa, however, domestic work is
prevalent in black families, and there is a growing trend towards
family domestic work: family members or close friends working as
domestic workers for kin. Typical challenges in the domestic work
sector include the navigation of employer–employee relationships,
which shape the negotiation of other working conditions. In family
domestic work, the setting is worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic
and implementation of working from home. This paper draws
from 15 semi-structured interviews conducted with black women
working as family domestic workers. The findings suggest that
family domestic work is centred in reciprocal caring — sister-maids
are financially enabled to support families and sister-madams are
assisted with domestic duties. Covid-19 has had an impact on family
domestic work and family–work relationships, whereby sister-maids
had difficulties working in the presence of sister-madams and their
children. Hence, silence is adopted by sister-maids challenged by
working during Covid-19. However, the pandemic also enabled
some sister-maids and sister-madams to grow closer to each other,
which strengthened family–work relationships.

The dawn of 1990s, social change in South Africa has provided a series of opportunities such as
to redress the past narrow cultural perspective in all related structures such as private and
government institutions including the sphere of learning. The adoption of the Batho-pele moral
standard as a guiding philosophy was perceived as a progressive step towards redressing
apartheid oriented leadership style in administration of service delivery and related activities.
Nevertheless, literature review and observable traditional management fundamentals such as the
Black African workers – proletarised and vulnerable, and European, whites – management –
possession of resources and advantaged remain the mainstay of the practice. Furthermore, these
limitations are exacerbated by the high rate of corruption of which tends to suggest the decay of
moral standards. In conclusion, this article recommends the deployment of leadership
knowledgeable of multicultural leadership style that recognizes all diverse cultural values in the
country like South Africa.

This paper provides an account of a failed attempt to transform the teacher education curriculum
in the Faculty of Education at a historically white university in South Africa. Based on a larger
study, the paper argues that academics in the Faculty were strongly allied to the apartheidtainted
education philosophy of Fundamental Pedagogics (FP) that caused them to resist
curriculum transformation. Using their dominant positions, the senior academics undermined
the transformation process by deceiving the administrative structures of the university. Using
Bourdieu’s signature concepts of field, habitus, capital and hysteresis (a condition in which the
habitus is no longer in synch with a field that is undergoing fundamental change), this paper
argues that the practices of the senior academics were acts of symbolic violence because they
arbitrarily chose to continue the established culture of FP that was targeted for transformation
by the university. The institutional power of the senior Professors that enabled their practice
of symbolic violence is explained with the concept of academic capital. Bourdieu’s theory of
reflexivity is discussed as a practical intervention that has the potential to assist academics
and university managers to limit the effects of symbolic violence in curriculum production. In
closing, the paper briefly touches on the recent student protests at South African universities
and argues for the extension of Bourdieu’s conceptualisation of symbolic domination to include
the relationship between symbolic and physical violence, which is a neglected area of higher
education studies, particularly in societies with a history of colonialism and racialised social
inequality.

The paper investigates factors influencing binge drinking behavior among university undergraduate students. Data is drawn from a quantitative survey conducted on undergraduate students’ perceptions of peer pressure, students living arrangement, socio-economic status and binge drinking at a South African university. 330 students participated in the study by completing a paper-based survey. The study found a statistically significant correlation between factors of peer pressure, students staying off-campus, high socio-economic status and binge drinking. Female students engage in binge drinking more than male students. Students with friends who drink were more likely to engage in binge drinking than those with friends drinking less. Students living off campus were more likely to engage in binge drinking of alcohol than those staying on campus. Students with high socioeconomic status were more likely to engage in binge drinking than those with low socioeconomic status. The paper makes an empirical contribution to future studies to explore binge drinking behavior amongst university students.
