Title: Barolong research : note on the history of the Barolong farms.
Author: Schapera, I.
Abstract: This note describes the events leading to the division of Barolong land into individual farms towards the end of the nineteenth century. Chief Montshiwa followed the example of the booSeleka chief, Morôka, in Thaba Nchu. The division was presumed to be the best way to keep the land from falling into the hands of Europeans. During 1892, the High Commissioner agreed in principle, but ruled that the land grants should take the form of leases, and that title should remain vested in the chief and the tribe.
