The first 77 pages of the diary, give an overview of Carl Hoffmann's early years in Zielenzig, Prussia, and at the Berlin Mission seminary. Pages 78-141 describe Hoffmann's journey from Hamburg to Gutu in Mashonaland (Zimbabwe). Carl Hoffmann travelled together with Berlin missionary Ernst Friedrich Pauli. Hoffmann describes his feelings and observations about mission work and the local customs of the indigenous people in Southern Africa.	en
