dc.description.abstract The aim of this article is to explore the legislative origin of adoption in South Africa. It is common knowledge that South African law is based on Roman- Dutch principles and that English law has also influenced our legal system. The article starts off with a brief discussion of Roman and Roman-Dutch law, whereafter South African law 􀌛 as it relates to the legislative introduction of adoption in this country 􀌛 is discussed. Ultimately a conclusion is reached as to the origin of adoption legislation in South Africa. en
