dc.description.abstract This article provides an overview of the critical aspects for effective leadership that is needed in the South African Public Service to promote transformation. This article analyses the feasibility of implementing transformational leadership approach in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). A qualitative case study is undertaken in this regard. The literature and findings of the case suggest that transformational leadership is critical for advancing transformation by the SANDF. The research suggests that the lack of an effective leadership approach has a negative impact on transformation in the SANDF. en
