<description>Baḥt fī al-ṣuʻūbāt al-tīyah tawājahhān ṭalāb al-lugat al-ʻArabīyat bi-al-ṣaff al-khāmis al-thānawī fī jumhūrīya Maurīshīwas
Nazīr, ʻAbdu al-Ṣammad
Based on the examiners’ reports of the University of Cambridge on the&#13;
shortcomings of the students of form V (school certificate level) in Arabic language&#13;
in the international examinations of year 2008 and 2009 and on the proposals and&#13;
recommendations therein, the researcher started this research work to address the&#13;
difficulties faced by students in Arabic language in the grammatical rules when&#13;
writing essays and in translation from Arabic to English and vice versa in form V&#13;
(school certificate level) and chose Doha Academy (secondary department) in&#13;
Mauritius as model.&#13;
The research work in fact confirmed the errors of students in the grammatical&#13;
rules after analyzing the examination scripts of the mock examinations run at the&#13;
school during the year 2009 and 2010 and the researcher came to know about the&#13;
causes of errors which were also confirmed by means of a questionnaire distributed&#13;
to the students at this level.&#13;
The researcher’s interviews with the male and female teachers of Arabic&#13;
language at School certificate level on the issue were of great benefits and they in&#13;
fact made mention of the grammatical errors which the researcher came across in&#13;
the mock examinations’ scripts after close study and analysis.&#13;
The researcher also considered the importance of the contrastive analysis&#13;
between Arabic and English due to its effect in learning Arabic as a second&#13;
language.&#13;
ط&#13;
After analysis of the questionnaire and interviews, the researcher came&#13;
across a number of important issues which he mentioned in details among the&#13;
results which he concluded.&#13;
The researcher concluded that most of the errors in grammar are due to the&#13;
influence of the English language on the Arabic language through linguistic&#13;
interference, transfer of experience, generalization, as well as errors related to the&#13;
target language itself like hypercorrection and intralingual phenomenon etc. And&#13;
that the errors found in translation are caused mainly because of lack of Arabic&#13;
vocabularies as well as literal translation and a lack of fluency and confidence in&#13;
using Arabic structures and grammar.&#13;
Finally, the researcher mentioned a number of recommendations and&#13;
suggestions which he considers to be a priority and should be executed if we really&#13;
wish to eliminate difficulties and problems in the process of teaching and learning&#13;
of the Arabic language at this level and to see the progress of this language in this&#13;
island.; على (university of Cambridge) بناء على ما قدمّت جامعة كمبرج&#13;

تعرّف الباحث على أسباب الأخطاء التي أكّدها الاستبيان الموزّع على طلاب هذا المستوى.&#13;
وكانت لمقابلات الباحث م مدرسي ومدرسات هذا المستوى حول القضية ثمراتها حيث&#13;
أكّدت كذلك ما وجدها الباحث من الأخطاء في النحو والصرف في أوراق إجابات الأمتحان بعد&#13;
الدراسة والتحليل.&#13;
رأى الباحث كذلك أهمية التحليل التقابلي بين العربية والانجليزية لتأثير هذه الأخيرة في تعلّم&#13;
الطلبة اللغة العربية كلغة ثانية.&#13;
بعد تحليل الاستبيان والمقابلات وصل الباحث إلى عدد من القضايا المهمة وذكرها بالتفصيل&#13;
في النتائج في آخر البحث.&#13;
وصل الباحث إلى أن اكثر الأخطاء ترج إلى تأثير اللغة الانجليزية على اللغة العربية تتمثل&#13;
في التداخل اللغوي ونقل الخبرة والتعميم السلبي كما أن هناك أخطاء تتعلق باللغة اهمدف كالمبالغة&#13;
في التصويب وتداخل اللغة نفسها.&#13;
وترج الأخطاء في الترجمة أساسا إلى النقص في المفردات العربية، فضلا عن الترجمة الحرفية&#13;
وعدم الطلاقة والثقة في استخدام التراكيب العربية والتدقيق النحوي.&#13;
وأخيرا ذكر الباحث عددا من التوصيات والاقتراحات التي يعتبرها من الأولويات&#13;
والضروريات ا ولتي يوصي بتنفيذها إذا أُريد بالفعل القضاء على الصعوبات والمشكلات في تعليم&#13;
اللغة العربية وتعلمه وتقدم هذه اللغة في هذه الجزيرة.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5722</link>
<description>Mental tropes in the Holy Qur'an
Emritte, Nazeer Hussein
This is a systematic study of tropes of the Holy Qur`an, divided into four chapters…&#13;
The first chapter is entitled: “An historical review of rhetoric and stylistics” and it&#13;
consists of two sections; the first section is entitled: “Western rhetoric and stylistics”&#13;
where as the second section deals with “Arabic rhetoric and stylistics”.&#13;
The second chapter is entitled: “Tropes and their components” and it consists of two&#13;
sections; the first section is entitled: “the definition of tropes”. This section deals with&#13;
the definition of “literal expressions” and “figurative expressions”, and the required&#13;
condition for figurative expressions; that is the syntactical and semantic coherence and&#13;
relationships. The second section is entitled: “Components of tropes” which deals with&#13;
different components of tropes.&#13;
The third chapter is entitled: “Linguistic tropes of the Holy Qur`an” and it consists of&#13;
two sections; the first section is entitled: “The spread of linguistic tropes in the Holy&#13;
Qur`an”. The second section is entitled: “Relationship of linguistic tropes in the Holy&#13;
Qur`an”. This section quotes each and every relationship of linguistic tropes in the Holy&#13;
Qur`an.&#13;
The fourth chapter is entitled: “mental tropes in the Holy Qur`an”, and it consists of&#13;
three sections; the first section is entitled: “Mental tropes in the Holy Qur`an, from part&#13;
1 to part 10”. The second section is entitled: “Mental tropes in the Holy Qur`an, from&#13;
part 11 to part 20”, and the third section is entitled: “Mental tropes in the Holy Qur`an,&#13;
from part 21 to part 30”. These sections quote verses of the Holy Qur`an which contain&#13;
mental tropes.

<title>Transcedence in immanence - a conversation with Jacques Derrida on space, time and meaning</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5449</link>
<description>Transcedence in immanence - a conversation with Jacques Derrida on space, time and meaning
Kruger, Jacob Petrus
This study postulates the existence of a notion of transcendence in immanence in&#13;
the thought of Jacques Derrida. The deconstruction of, amongst others, Husserlian&#13;
phenomenology and Saussurean structuralism, affords Derrida the opportunity of&#13;
presenting a thought of contamination, haunting and impurity, which is a thought of&#13;
transcendence in immanence. The hypothesis of a notion of transcendence in&#13;
immanence in Derrida’s thought is refined by specifying it as temporal&#13;
transcendence in immanence. Accordingly, the intimation of transcendence in&#13;
immanence does not amount to the ontological acceptance of a separate&#13;
transcendent realm. On the contrary, what appears is a monism: the infinite finitude&#13;
of temporality.&#13;
In conversation with the notion of temporal transcendence in immanence intimated in&#13;
Derrida’s thought, this study proposes a notion of theological transcendence in&#13;
immanence. Theological transcendence in immanence is presented as an inflected&#13;
interpretive performance of salient themes from the tradition of Christian theology&#13;
prior to the advent of modernity. From this perspective, all being is referred to God&#13;
and finite creation is deemed to be a contingent, non-necessary participation, at an&#13;
unquantifiable analogical remove, in the life and being of God. The notions of space,&#13;
time and meaning that emerge from such a premise are subsequently explored, and&#13;
brought into conversation with the corresponding notions in Derrida’s work.&#13;
The study concludes by asking whether the conversation between the notions of&#13;
temporal and theological transcendence in immanence can in any way be furthered,&#13;
or whether the two positions should rather be regarded as irreconcilable, that is, as&#13;
lying separatively transcendent to each other. In response, it is suggested that the&#13;
notion of transcendence in immanence implies the attempt to relate juxtaposed&#13;
positions after the fashion of transcendence in immanence. The possibility of&#13;
temporal transcendence in immanence inhabiting theological transcendence in&#13;
immanence after the fashion of transcendence in immanence is firstly considered&#13;
and rejected. Thereupon, the reverse option, namely that of theological&#13;
transcendence in immanence making use of temporal transcendence in immanence,&#13;
iii&#13;
while at the same time transcending it, is considered and judged to be a suitable&#13;
provisional outcome of the conversation with Derrida.

<title>Outsider Buddhism : a study of Buddhism and Buddhist education in the U.S. prison system</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5105</link>
<description>Outsider Buddhism : a study of Buddhism and Buddhist education in the U.S. prison system
McIvor, Paul
Buddhist prison outreach is a relatively recent development, in the United States of&#13;
America and elsewhere, and has yet to be chronicled satisfactorily. This thesis traces the&#13;
physical, legal and social environment in which such activities take place and describes the&#13;
history of Buddhist prison outreach in the USA from its earliest indications in the 1960s&#13;
to the present day. The mechanics of Buddhist prison outreach are also examined.&#13;
Motivations for participating in Buddhist prison outreach are discussed, including&#13;
Buddhist textual supports, role models and personal benefits. This paper then proposes&#13;
that volunteers active in this area are members of a liminal communitas as per Victor Turner&#13;
and benefit from ‘non-player’ status, as defined by Ashis Nandy. The experiences of the&#13;
inmates themselves is beyond the scope of this thesis.
